The Colour Red: Complementary Colours

This is part of a series of posts about colour.  This month I am focusing on the colour red.

Red with Split Complementary Colours

When you look at the colour wheel, the colour opposite red is green.  To show how complementary colours work, I have made a red/green complementary necklace above.  I have to say that this is not my favourite colour combination with red and I think that’s because it reminds me of Christmas.  Whenever I have put red and green together in jewellery, and tried to sell it anywhere, the same comment is guaranteed: “Oh, that looks very Christmas-sy.”

Even though it look spectacular in the garden – think red roses on a green rose bush – it just doesn’t look as amazing as a piece of jewellery.

The second picture is of a necklace made with red beads mixed with the colours that are next to green on the colour wheel.  This is a split-complementary colour scheme, and I think it looks very fresh.  I like the contrast of the yellow-green and the blue-green colours with the darkness of the red.

I’m not always a fan of complementary colour schemes, however split-complementary colour schemes can be quite stunning.  I’ll show you more along the way as I write about colours.

On my walk this morning….

  • I am getting ready for a Ladies Night In this Friday night at the Murray Bridge Community Centre.
  • I am also getting ready for the Flinders Street Market on Saturday May 2.  Always a good day out.

  • I am looking forward to getting back into a routine now that everyone is going back to school!

Does your mum drink gin?

At the market on the weekend I displayed a small selection of my Bombay Sapphire Gin jewellery (along with some other recycled glass jewellery).  Anyway, the Bombay Sapphire jewellery caught people’s eye because it was displayed with the bottle, and it’s also a beautiful colour.  When I started talking to people about the process of taking the empty bottle through to finished beads and jewellery, there was often that moment where they would say “My mum is a gin drinker, I am going to buy those earrings for her for Mother’s Day.”

Does your mum drink gin?  Or wine?  Or beer?

Maybe she would like a necklace or a pair of earrings like the ones pictured below?  The flower bead necklaces start at $65 for a necklace with 3 flowers.

On my walk this morning…

Morning Walk April 20

  • I had a great time at the Flinders Street Market on the weekend.  Lots of lovely customers.  It was great to see so many people loving the recycled glass jewellery!  I’ll be there again on Saturday May 2.
  • I’m excited about my work being on display as part of the Reart exhibition in Sydney.  It opens to the public on Wednesday.
  • I finished reading “Lost and Found” and loved it!
  • I’m enjoying the slower pace of the school holidays!

Recycled Glass Beads

I am getting ready for the Flinders Street Market this weekend.  It’s a special event market, where all of the stallholders are making eco-friendly products.  I will be there Saturday and Sunday, from 10-3.  I’m really looking forward to being part of this market again.

I will have a range of recycled glass beads and jewellery available, and I’ll also have some “sale” items.

The Colour Red: What Looks Good with Red?

All of these necklaces would look great with a red dress!

What looks good with red?  Black and white and grey look really good with red!

You can add a touch of red to the necklace, or simply go with shades of black, white and grey.

Black and white and a touch of grey work perfectly with red.  Black and white with a touch of red!I wear a lot of red, and I also wear a lot of black…so I would probably choose the black and white necklace with a splash of red in it!

  • On My Walk April 13I am grateful for all of the orders that were placed for my new work over the past few days.  Thank you.
  • I am excited about Flinders Street Market this weekend.  I’ll be there Saturday and Sunday from 10 until 3.  I’ll share a sneak peak of some new work later this week.
  • I finished reading “Still Alice” by Lisa Genova.  I find myself questioning my memory more than ever after reading this!  I finished listening to “Burial Rites” by Hannah Kent.  Oh my, what a great piece of writing, I absolutely loved it.  And I started reading “Lost and Found” by Brooke Davis.  One word…superb.
  • it is school holiday time, and I am looking forward to more relaxed mornings!

The Colour Red: Analogous Colours

This is part of a series of posts about colour.  This month I am focusing on the colour red.

If you look at red on the colour wheel, you will see on one side of it a red/purple colour and on the other side a red/orange colour.  When you put those colours together, it gives you necklaces like the ones pictured below!

Red Analogous Coloured BeadsWhat I like about putting these colours together is that they will then work with lots of different outfits.  Whether you want to add some more colour to a red top, or brighten up a more neutral grey top, the colour combinations work beautifully (see below).
