Week One: Kandinsky inspired beads
Week Two: Kandinsky inspired colourful necklaces
Week Three: Kandinsky inspired analogous necklaces
Week Four: Kandinsky inspired red necklaces
And for the final set in this series inspired by Kandinsky’s painting “Colour Study. Squares with Concentric Circles.”
Remember I mentioned that I used to make a lot of glass beads inspired by this picture? Well, these necklaces remind me of what I used to make. It was nice to be a bit more structured in my design for these necklaces. I used opaque glass in the first necklace, and transparent glass in the second necklace to get different effects.
I have had a lot of fun playing with colour, but this week I decided to take it down a notch, and use colours that were next to each other on the colour wheel. I really like how these turned out!
This year we decided that we would go to the Murray Bridge Show. Last year we were a bit too busy looking for houses, but this year, because our house is very close to the showgrounds, we thought we would venture over and check it out.
I was excited to see how my entries had done in the show, and was so pleased to see they had come 1st, 2nd and 3rd!
We had fun looking at our kid’s art work in the show. Finn had made a nest picture for the Learning Together display. Ciara was part of the colouring in competition, and she also had her work chosen for the Murray Bridge South Primary School display.
It reminded me that going to the show should mostly be about the competition entries, the animals, and being part of a rural community. It didn’t need to be about rides and show bags! We spent most of the rest of the night doing the $2 Bunyip Trail, where the kids got all sorts of free things (including potatoes, carrots and onions)!
I think we’ll be back next year!
So, last week I mentioned the inspiration for the colour play series over the next four weeks was Kandinsky’s “Concentric Circles on Squares” painting. This week I took a slightly different interpretation of the painting and made these necklaces:
If you know my work from a few years ago, you might know that I have been slightly obsessed with the Kandinsky painting “Colour Study. Squares with Concentric Circles.”
For a long time I made glass beads and jewelllery inspired by that painting, not that you could always tell where the inspiration had come from!
Some of you might also know that I am studying part time at the moment! Anyway, for my last art assignment, we had to do something inspired by colour. I decided to be inspired by the Kandinsky painting again! It got me thinking about glass beads, old and new, and over the next four weeks I’ll show you what I created.
Let’s start with these beads that represent the painting in glass…
Here is a recap of the silver and gold colour play series!
Week 1 – gold and silver pixie dust on clear glass beads
Week 2 – gold and silver foil and wire on recycled glass beads
Week 3 – gold and silver painted onto etched black beads
Tomorrow night the annual Flame On exhibition at Kirra Galleries opens. If you are in Melbourne at any time over the next month, it’s definitely worth popping in and having a look.
This year my work was done around the theme of coral and the environmental issues that the Great Barrier Reef is going through. All of my beads were made from recycled glass. I made 3 series of work, all slightly different.
This is the first series. The beads were made from a clear wine bottle, and decorated with green/blue frit (smashed up glass).
I’ve been enjoying the silver and gold colour play…I hope you have too!
This is the final experiment in this series. I wanted to use gold and silver paint to decorate the beads. This is the first time I have ever painted beads, so it took a little bit of experimenting, but I’m kind of pleased with the end result, and I’m kind of looking forward to trying some new ideas that I thought of while working through this process.
At the moment I have just made the beads, as I want to keep working on things before I make them into jewellery.
