Jenny Knight and Lyn Branson

I wanted to share with you a selection of work by Jenny Knight and Lyn Branson.  Jenny is also a member of the Textile and Arts Collective – T’Arts – in Gays Arcade.  This month it is her turn to display her work in the window, and she invited fellow bead enthusiast Lyn Branson to also display some of her work.

Jenny and Lyn are both extremely talented seed-beaders.  They make very unique and original pieces of jewellery, that are exquisite in their details.

What I also like about their work is that they also incorporate some of my beads in amongst what they are creating.  I love it when people use my beads in their designs, and both Jenny and Lyn use my beads in ways that I never could.

Enjoy the photos below, and if you would like to have a closer look at any of their work, it will be on display at T’Arts until Saturday July 27.

On my walk this morning…

Morning Walk

The mornings are getting colder and darker, so I need to think about what I am looking forward to over winter:

  • My next newsletter will be sent on Thursday July 2.  I’m trying to decide the colour of the month for July.  This month is brown.  Any suggestions?
  • My next shift at T’Arts is on July 11.  I love spending the day in the shop, and really look forward to connecting with the customers who visit.
  • The Craftapalooza Market!  A special Flinders Street Market event on 18-19 July.  I will be there both days.
  • SALA Festival starts August 1.  I will have some recycled glass bead jewellery in the City Library.  And a small selection of work will be included as part of Pepper Street Art Gallery “Renew” exhibition.
  • A trip to Melbourne in August!  I am going to spend the weekend with my mum.  Can’t wait.

OK, maybe winter won’t be so bad after all.

The Colour Brown – with a splash of Red

This is part of a series of posts about colour.  This month I am focusing on the colour brown.

Brown and Red look so great together, it’s because if you had to mix brown as a paint colour, you would have some red in there to start making it.  Brown, when you put it with red, is really harmonious.

I have made an assortment of beads for the following necklaces, all with brown and red patterns, and I have to say if I wasn’t a red/black/white girl, I might have changed my mind after this week and become a red/brown girl!

Both of these necklaces were available for sale in my shop, however the long version of this necklace has already sold.  Click on each photo to take you to the listing in the shop.

If you would like to be on my newsletter list, where you will find out about all of the latest product releases, and also be in with a chance to win a pair of earrings…simply subscribe here!

The Colour Brown

This is part of a series of posts about colour.  This month I am focusing on the colour brown.

I have a confession to make.  I don’t wear the colour brown!  I think it’s because I wear a lot of black, I just haven’t ever bothered with brown.

Last month I started playing with some brown and purple colour combinations, and I thought to myself…hmm, brown is pretty cool, it works really well with a lot of colours.

That’s why I made it the colour of the month.

Brown is a great neutral colour in your wardrobe, and you’ll see over the course of the month how great the colour can look with all sorts of other colours.

Let’s start with brown and ivory.  Ivory is a great contrast to the darker brown.

The Colour Purple – with Yellow

This is part of a series of posts about colour.  This month I am focusing on the colour purple.

This colour combination is awesome.  There is something really modern and also really funky about it.

I had planned to make some new necklaces to show on the blog, but unfortunately this week, life got in the way a little bit, so I have ended up using photographs of some necklaces that I made last year (sorry about that).

Both of those necklaces have sold, so it made me realise that….yes, I should make some more necklaces with these colour combinations!  Darn it!  When I get some new work made, I’ll be sure to put an update on the blog.

I’ve really enjoyed looking at the colour purple, and the colours that it works really well with.

Next month, the colour of the month is BROWN!  I will be doing things a little bit differently next month, and will hopefully be a little more organised!

The Colour Purple – with Brown

I was at a market a few weeks ago, and I had on display some of the new necklaces I was making, like the ones pictured above.  I had made them in 5 different colours (purple, brown, red, green and black/white).

The first necklace of the series to sell was the purple one.  I was lucky to get a photo of it, and if you click the link it will take you to a post about it.  As I was showing the range of necklaces, I had put the purple one next to the brown one, and thought to myself “wow, they look really great together”.

Funnily enough, the second necklace to sell was the brown one.  Unfortunately I did not get a photo of that one.

But, seeing those two colours together made me think: what about a necklace with both purple and brown beads?

So, I set out to make lots of purple and brown beads, and I was able to make this series of necklaces, that I am very fond of.  I knew that purple worked with lots of colours, but I had forgotten about brown.  How had I forgotten about brown?  (Answer: honestly, I think it’s because brown is not my first go-to colour choice).

It made me think about brown, a lot more than I have in the past, so much that I have decided that brown will be the colour of the month for June!

Next week I will have my final post about purple, and a surprisingly excellent colour that works well with it.

The Colour Purple – with a splash of red

Last week I introduced you to the colour purple.  I mentioned that a lot of colours worked really well with purple.  I have quite a few favourite colour combinations that I particularly like, but my favourite is purple teamed with some red!

All shades of purple and red (even splashes of bright pink), work beautifully together to create really stunning necklaces.

This is mostly because red and purple are on the same side of the colour wheel, so when you use these colours they work well together in an Analagous Colour Scheme kind of way!

Mothers Day at T’Arts

MothersDay1MothersDay2MothersDay3

MothersDay4

Some of you will know that I am a member of the Textile and Art Collective known as T’Arts, which is located in Gays Arcade in Adelaide.

Each month the window display changes and a different artists is featured in the window.  At certain times during the year the entire collective gets involved with a window display, and at the moment our Mother’s Day window is officially open!

This is an extra special window, where members have been asked to donate small pieces of art, with all money raised being donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

I wasn’t sure what to donate as I don’t actually paint or draw.  I thought I would stick to what I could do, and that was make glass beads and jewellery!  But part of me kind of wanted to try painting too.

So, I compromised!  And I painted the little canvases pink!

Then I added a pair of my etched glass earrings.  All of my items will be for sale for $10.

I have had a look at some of the other work on display, and there are some really amazing pieces that artists have created, but work is selling really quickly too.  If you haven’t been to T’Arts for a while, now is a great time for a visit.

The Colour Purple

This is part of a series of posts about colour.  This month I am focusing on the colour purple.

Purple is such a calm, soothing colour, and from my experience, purple is one of the colours most bought as a gift for someone else.  I think that’s because it is really hard to dislike the colour purple.  If you are going to wear purple, it will go with a lot of other colours – red, brown, yellow, blue, black, pink.  It looks great on most people, and it’s extremely versatile.

The tricky thing is that there are many, many different shades of purple.  If you ask me to make you a purple necklace, there will be dozens of rods of glass that I can choose from.  Luckily, they all look great together!

I recently made this purple necklace, with lots of different shades of purple. It attracted a lot of attention when I put it out on display at the Flinders Street Market, and the first person to try it on ended up buying it.  A beautiful necklace, with a lot of really interesting beads on it. I enjoyed putting it together.

Next week I’ll start showing you some colours that look great with purple.

The Colour Red: Complementary Colours

This is part of a series of posts about colour.  This month I am focusing on the colour red.

Red with Complementary Colour Green

Red with Split Complementary Colours

When you look at the colour wheel, the colour opposite red is green.  To show how complementary colours work, I have made a red/green complementary necklace above.  I have to say that this is not my favourite colour combination with red and I think that’s because it reminds me of Christmas.  Whenever I have put red and green together in jewellery, and tried to sell it anywhere, the same comment is guaranteed: “Oh, that looks very Christmas-sy.”

Even though it look spectacular in the garden – think red roses on a green rose bush – it just doesn’t look as amazing as a piece of jewellery.

The second picture is of a necklace made with red beads mixed with the colours that are next to green on the colour wheel.  This is a split-complementary colour scheme, and I think it looks very fresh.  I like the contrast of the yellow-green and the blue-green colours with the darkness of the red.

I’m not always a fan of complementary colour schemes, however split-complementary colour schemes can be quite stunning.  I’ll show you more along the way as I write about colours.
