Square Hoops

recycled glass earrings

I think winter is a great time to wear hoop earrings. For a start, they are less likely to get caught in your scarf! And they also look really cool.

I like this blue combination of beads. One of the beads was made from a Bombay Sapphire Gin bottle, and the other was from a Banrock Station wine bottle (decorated with some smashed up glass).

Colour chaos

recycled glass necklace

Happy Easter Sunday! Today we are chilling at home, and I am playing with beads while the kids are eating their Easter eggs!

I got all of the drip beads that I have collected from all sorts of projects and put them all together on my beading mat. Took a few colours out, and then started weaving them onto three strands of wire. In the end it was a bit random, a bit undone when it didn’t look quite right, and a bit of just hoping for the best!  It does not sit flat, and it has lots of movement and colour, making it a very unique and interesting necklace indeed.

Colour Play #4 – Flowers

blue flower necklace

And now for the final instalment of my colour play series for March! It’s been a lovely flower-filled month, and I have really enjoyed making this work.

Today it’s all the pretty blues and greens featuring in this necklace! I love how bright and vibrant the beads are.  All a little bit different, lots of colour and sparkle.

Check out the shop if you’d like to see more of this type of jewellery in other colour combinations.

Silver and Gold

recycled glass earrings

Nearly all of the rings that I wear (or combinations of rings) are silver and gold (or white gold and yellow gold). I love the contrast of these two metals.

I know, some people are “oh, I only wear gold” and that’s totally fine.

And some people are “yeah, I only wear silver” and that’s also totally fine.

But I love both metals, and I love wearing them together, so I guess that means I love these earrings!

These beads were made from a Coopers Ale bottle.

Colour Play #3 – Flowers

black and white flower necklace

Last week it was flower necklaces and earrings that were pretty in pink.

The week before that it all started with the most colourful rainbow of flowers!

This week! It’s time to see some colour play flowers that are neutral and classic! I think this is a necklace that you could wear with so many different things. A simple white shirt, a  black top, or even wear it with more colourful clothes, like a red dress!

I love the black and white, and the three different shades of grey make it really interesting. Feel free to visit my shop here.

My new obsession

I think it’s safe to say that making bracelets is my new obsession! So here is a little story about bracelets…

Last year, just before Christmas, I was asked several times if I had any bracelets for sale. I replied that I had a few, but not many, as I was finding them “difficult” to make.

What I meant by difficult was a couple of things. First, wrist sizes vary! Yes, there kind of is an average wrist size, but I was finding that most people either wanted that average size bracelet made smaller or larger. And second, I was making them to match in with necklaces. It was frustrating when the necklace would sell, and the bracelet was left behind.

So I kind of stopped making bracelets for a while. But since I have been doing this creative/making challenge, I have found a new passion for making one of a kind bracelets. They don’t need to match a necklace, they can just simply be a beautiful bracelet on their own. I’m loving the freedom in making them.

Milk Glass

milk glass necklace

Quite a few years ago I had a special request from a customer to make some beads for her with “opaque white glass that was recycled”.

At the time I said to her that seemed like it could be a difficult thing for me to do, as I wasn’t sure where to even find this type of glass!

I ventured to the local secondhand market and found a lovely white cup which was slightly damaged. I asked the person selling it what it was made from and was told “Milk Glass”.

Well, I still don’t know a lot about milk glass, but I do know that when I melt it, it makes really pretty beads. They have a bit of a lustre to them that makes them look really lovely.

Milk glass is super hard to melt, probably taking the longest of all the glasses to melt with my torch, hence I only made 5 test beads for this necklace! I was really happy with how the colour turned out though….so there may be more to come at some stage!

Purple Glass

recycled glass beads

Purple can be a tricky colour when it comes to glass objects. I have found a purple bowl in the past, but when I melted it, the colour burned out of it!

I was pleased to find this small purple plate recently. I wasn’t sure how it would hold up in the flame, so I was really pleased when it melted just fine. I tested the glass by making several beads, and happily made this little pendant.
